Introductory
THUS Sixteenth Issue of the Saskatoon City Directory, comprising the City proper and all suburbs, is presented to the public with the belief that it will meet the demands of the most exacting and will fulfill the requirements of all its users.
The information in this book is gathered as far as possible by actual canvass, and is compiled in a way to ensure maximum accuracy. While the publishers will in no way be held responsible for any errors that may occur, they will be glad to have any inaccuracies brought to their attention, so that they may be corrected in succeeding editions.
The canvass for the present book was made under favorable conditions, with a crew of efficient canvassers, under the immediate supervision of carefully trained examiners.
The results of the canvass were most satisfactory and the manner in which the information checked in, proved the thoroughness of the work.
Upon examination and use as a work of reference, the directory will be found to contain a thorough and complete store of Information regarding all the Interests of the city. It is devoted to the advancement of all the city’s vital interests and has in each issue kept pace with its progress.
The library of city directories which is maintained by the publishers at The Board of Trade offices, for the use of its patrons, has proven a most valuable asset to the City of Saskatoon.
Through the exchange of directories with the various directory libraries
throughout the United States and Canada and the sale of the Saskatoon Directory to many institutions, hotels and stores in large cities, the directory is circulated throughout the country and serves as a lasting advertisement for our city.
The canvass for the ISaskatoon Directory includes the entire city, so that the name of each person emDloyed should be taken twice; once at the dwelling and again at the place of business. After the canvass has been completed, this information is compiled and it is necessary that there be two slips for each person employed. The information taken at the residence and place of business is compared before the duplicate is laid aside. When a discrepancy is found, a special messenger la dispatched to correct the conflicting information, or if the name has not been taken at both places, to retake it at the home or business place.
The new information is checked with the previous directory and each name in the old directory is accounted for.
It is this careful superintendence and revision which makes the directory estimate of population higher than the census figures.
The directory estimate of population is based on the actual number of names contained in the book, which is multiplied by a common multiple to allow for the married women and small children whose names do not appear.
Based upon the names contained in the pages of this book, it is estimated that the population of Saskatoon is '315.021. This includes considerable territory beyond the city limits, which is canvassed in order that the names of all people doing business in Saskatoon may be obtained for the directory.
The publishers desire to thank their patrons and the general public for the courtesy extended at all times to their representatives, and to express their ap¬ preciation for the confidence which the business and professional men of Saskatoon have always shown in their publications
Respectfully, The Publishers,
HENDERSON DIRECTORIES, LIMITED,
October, 1923.

City of Saskatoon
Saskatoon is situated in Township 36, Range 5, west of the Third Meridian, on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. It is the geographical and -commercial centre of Central Saskatchewan. It is served by the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways. As the site of the University and Agricultural College, Saskatoon is the educational headquarters of the Province.
The portion of the city on the east side of the river was originally known as East Saskatoon, but as the original villages grew and con¬ fusion between the post offices resulted, the name “East Saskatoon” was changed to Nutana, a word which is claimed by some to have had an Indian origin, meaning “first born,” because it was the first settlement.
The name Saskatoon is derived from the Indian Cree name “Mis-sask-qua-too-mina,” or “Mis-sas-a-too-mina,” and sometimes contracted into “Saskatoomina.” This word is plural. The singular is ecured by dropping the final “a” The name was given by the Indians to the berry which is found in such profusion in this vicinity and commonly referred to now as the “Saskatoon Berry,” or “Saska¬ toons.” According to a member of the original survey party, the Indians used to gather large quantities of these berries and walk through the camps selling them, crying which sounded to the mem¬ bers of the party like “Sakatoons, Saskatoons.”
The City lies 216 miles north of the boundary between the United States and Canada, 140 miles from the western and 215 miles from the eastern boundary of the Province, so that its position is central. It is the only large city in the direct line between Winnipeg and Ed¬ monton, being almost midway between the two, 450 miles northwest of Winnipeg and a little over 300 miles southeast of Edmonton.
Five bridges, the newest being a handsome arched structure of reinforced concrete, costing upwards of $500,000, cross the river with¬ in the city limits. Three of these bridges join the central portions of the city, two of them being for vehicular and pedestrian traffic, while the third carries the Canadian National Railway tracks and has a footpath alongside. The remaining two are railway bridges, one carrying the Canadian Pacific and the other the Canadian National Railway rails. To the east of Saskatoon, the modern city resulting from the uniting of the villages of West Saskatoon, Nutana and Riversdale and their subsequent allied growth, and about a mile away lies the town of Sutherland, where are the C. P. R. roundhouse and car repair tracks. Sutherland is an incorporated town but is united to Saskatoon by street car tracks, as well as by rail, and this route is part of the regular city service.
The natural fertility of the surrounding district which is well settled and the unique position of Saskatoon as a distributing point are the main contributing factors to the city’s prosperity and growth.
The townsite was surveyed in 1886, but the first railway did not come in until 1892. In 1899 Saskatoon consisted of a few houses on the east side of the river, while on the west side was the station house, the section foreman’s residence, the Royal Northwest Mounted Police Barracks, a stone building, a hotel, and about six other houses and shacks. About this time property in what is now the central portion of the city sold for $45 for 75 feet. In 1901 Saskatoon was incor¬ porated as a village, and in 1902 the first weekly newspaper was published bearing the title of “Saskatoon Phoenix.” In 1903 the town charter was obtained. In 1906 Saskatoon became a city, the population being estimated at 5,000.
Following the formation of the Province of Saskatchewan in 1905v the locating of the capital and the university became live public ques¬ tions. It was believed at that time that owing to its central location, Saskatoon would be chosen as the capital, but eventually a compromise was reached whereby Regina became the seat of government and the Provincial University was placed at Saskatoon.
From 1906 onwards expansion was very rapid, becoming phen- ominal about 1912, until today Saskatoon stands a city of handsome buildings and well paved streets, along the principal ones of which electric cars now run. In the residential sections the boulevarding system obtains, giving the streets a very attractive appearance. The broad South Saskatchewan River, which flows through the middle of the city between high banks covered with an abundance of trees, shrubbery and other natural, growth, besides providing an unlimited supply of purest water, passing through a modern filtration plant, lends a pleasing aspect, eliminating the tiresome monotony usually associated with centres of population established upon the prairies.
Not only is Saskatoon in the centre of the Saskatchewan, but it is also in the centre of Western Canada. By placing a finger on the centre of any map of Western Canada one cannot avoid placing it on Saskatoon.
Saskatoon is the only city in Central Saskatchewan. There being no other large point near, the vast surrounding territory is wholly hers because she has the competitive railway facilities and distribut¬ ing freight rates to control it absolutely as follows :
On carloads shipped in Saskatoon’s wholesale distributing terri¬ tory extends to about 48,600 square miles, stretching far into Alberta — indeed, to within 82 miles east of Edmonton — and even now em¬ bracing over two hundred points on no fewer than 2,225 miles of operating railways — a distance only 27 miles shorter than that from Montreal to Calgary, per C. P. R.
On goods manufactured locally, such as flour, Saskatoon controls a distributing area of about 70,000 square miles, within which there are at present 300 bright young towns and villages.
34
Saskatoon has expended very large sums of money upon her schools, varying from $118,000 to $156,000 on each building. The citizens favor municipal ownership so far as it is deemed practicable and judicious, and now control their water, light, power, street car system, sewerage and hospitals.
The splendid facilities now operating to Saskatoon, both in the form of railways and natural advantages, are more than sufficiently important to win her distinction as a great national commercial cen¬ tre. The three main lines of the three big Canadian railway com¬ panies are merely the framework upon which an intricate inter¬ threading of branch lines is being woven as circumstances permit.

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE General Information
The College of Agriculture is an integral part of the University and stands in the same relation to the University as do the Colleges of Arts and Science, Law and Engineering. It has a number of build¬ ings planned and equipped for carrying on its particular work and a staff of its own for the purpose of giving instruction in technical subjects and elementary work in English, Mathematics and the Sciences. Its laboratories and equipment are, under certain limita-
tions and restrictions, available to students in the other Colleges of the University.
Students in . Agriculture enjoy all the advantages — laboratory, library, social, dormitory life, public speaking and debate, athletics — that are incidental to a University. The atmosphere of the Univer¬ sity stimulates students to study and research and the staff and equip¬ ment induce them to participate in investigation work that will lead to a broader knowledge of the Science of Agriculture. Students who take one or more years’ work at the College should be able to conduct more profitably their farming enterprises and be better able to adapt themselves to new and changing conditions than if they had not had such advantages.
EMMANUEL COLLEGE In Affiliation with the University of Saskatchewan
The College is governed by two bodies, a Statutory Council, com¬ posed of ex-officio and elected members. Its appointment is regu¬ lated by canon and the elected members retire by rotation. Also by a Board of Governors appointed by the Colonial and Continental Church Society of London, England. The Council grants standings in Theo¬ logy, and the Board controls all matters affecting the welfare of the College, and the Proceedings of the College are reported annually to the synod of the Diocese of Saskatchewan. The Educational Com¬ mittee is made up of the Faculty, together with the Bishop, and three clerical and three lay members of the Board of Governors.
The College provides (1) an Associate course in Theology, (2) a pass course leading to the Testamur, (3) a course leading to the Licentiate in Theology, and (4) a course leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Divinity.

System of Street Names and Numbering
Streets run east and west, Avenues run north and south.
North and west of River gouges are numbered odd on west side of avenues and south side of streets; south and east of River houses are numbered odd on east side of . avenues and north side of streets.
Streets are called East and West with Avenue A and Lome Ave., which is a production of Avenue A across the River, as the dividing line. Avenues are called North and South with Twenty-second Street as the dividing line. In Nutana Aird Street is the dividing line.
The avenues west of Avenue A, with a few exceptions, are called by letters, Avenue W, a mile and a half west of Avenue A being the western city limits.
The avenues east of Avenue A to the River are called by num¬ bers, with the street skirting the River called Spadina Crescent.
The avenues on the south and east sides of the River are gener¬ ally called by names.
The streets on the south and east sides of the River are called by names ; commencing at the southerly city limits, one mile north of the south city limits, however, they are generally numbered from 1st to 18th streets; this is not regular and there are some streets called by names.
North and west of the River the streets are named at the south city limit and northerly for a mile and a half where numbers are used, commencing with 11th Street numbers are used from there to the north city limit half a block north of 37th Street. In this district there are also exceptions where some streets are known by names as in the City Park District where names ar used from Queen St. north¬ ward.
The system of house numbering adopted is the Decimal or Phila¬ delphia System, an even hundred numbers being allotted to each block. The one hundred block north, south, east or west commencing at the dividing line above referred to.
In the business district a house number is allotted for each 12 feet and in the residential district a number for each 25 feet.
The arrangement in street and avenue directory is in the follow¬ ing order: Alphabetical Streets and Avenues; Avenues A to Z; Numerical Avenues and Streets.
The arrangement by direction is East, West, South, North.
Where the odd and even numbers on all avenues or streets are separated, the east side on avenues will appear first and the south side will appear first on streets.
