When the howling winds are blowing, Cheerful gleams the faggot's blaze ;
And the tender plant that's growing, Grateful feels the sunny rays.

Now is seen the crocus peeping, And the modest snowdrop too ;
And beneath the hedge-row creeping, Purple violets meet our view.

Truant boys the birds'-nest handing, Leave the parent bird forlorn.

Now the verdant meads are glowing, Lark and thrush melodious sing ;
Whilst the joyous swains are mowing, And around the clover fling.

Whilst the noontide sunbeams brighten, Maidens turn the new-mown hay ;
But when vivid flashes frighten, They in terror haste away.

Sun enters Virgo, njj. The Virgin.
Now the yellow corn low bending, Reapers, scatter wide your gift ;
Gleaners, on your boon depending, Pick the scanty crop that's left.

Thirty Days. . The Balance.
The gleaner's task now being o'er, The sportsman takes abroad his gun ;
The dogs the covey scent once more, And now to fetch the game they run.
