NUMISMATIC RUMINATIONS by the Editor
Viewed from the Editor’s chair, things might become a bit dull if it wasn’t for the oppor- tunity of sharing some of the little unexpected joys with our readers. Most of the pleasures arise from the foibles of others, naturally, and not all of them can strictly be called unex- pected. For example, the Editor learned a number of years ago that he might as well make up his mind to live with the 1804 Dollar. The coin has the longevity of the well known cat. Some People hate to give up familiar myths even those recently invented. Others, not content to live in their fantasies take practical steps.
Just a week ago the famous Dollar appeared in the form of a startling reincarnation. After a preparatory phone call a gentleman from Boston arrived at Coin Galleries with no less than two out of a group of six he’d recently acquired in Siam, of all places. With disarming candor he described himself as an “amateur collector,” meaning that he hadn’t thought about coins since he put away his Lincoln Cent and Buffalo Nickel boards along with other childish things before submitting himself to the education dealt out by Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
On a recent visit to Siam he discovered quite a hoard of early bust type “Dollars” dated 1804 in the hands of an antique silver dealer. The date rang a bell so he bought. Now he wanted to know if they were genuine. Needless to say they were not. The pieces had been all too visibly made in a sand mold by some expert who knew a lot about casting in sand molds. The original model could have been a perfectly genuine coin with the date altered. The result was a curious double fault — a forgery of an altered date. The product was neatly turned out, but the tell-tale signs of casting could be seen unaided by a glass.
It might be more accurate to say that the signs of casting should have been clear to any- one who had even a vague familiarity with coins. The “shoulds” and “woulds” of this world are a constant cause of confusion, even among the initiated. Another gentleman from a different part of the country who might reasonably have been assumed to know better because of the nature of his activities made an agitated phone call about an 1804 Dollar he’d just acquired from someone who had found it, oddly enough, in Siam. Apparently he was so excited by the date that he never really looked at the coin. No doubt this is not the last we will hear of the newest 1804 Dollar. As a matter of technical interest, at the point of origin they are selling for $5.00 each. But there is something about the coin’s reputation that tends to unbalance the judgment. It is difficult not to think that a little basic education, numis- matic and otherwise, would be distinctly helpful.
And that, of course, is the nub of the problem. Education involves the correct use of words, which in turn requires having some understanding of their meaning. This could open a numismatic Pandora’s box if we’d let it, but we won’t — at least not now. The dis- cussion can be limited to a word with no particular numismatic meaning at all. In a whimsical
67
moment a few years ago in this publication the Editor solemnly catalogued a group of identical buttons. The first was described as “Unique.” Then two exactly the same were called, “Twice as Unique.” Of course the message never reached those who needed to read it. Now the distinguished Editor of Spink & Son’s NUMISMATIC CIRCULAR, in the September, 1972 issue, has call attention to the word again. His small comment was titled, “UNIQUE AS THEY ALL ARE.” Actually he didn’t have to invent the title for his little squib. He just used a direct quotation from an American Auction Sale Catalogue. He then went on to dis- close a discovery of his own — “If this medal were a coin it would be unique.” Splendid, but not particularly literate. One of the best examples is the most recent. A certain coin was advertised as, ‘ Extremely unique, perhaps 6 — 8 known.” When we realize that unique is based on the Latin “unicus” and means “single in kind or excellence,” it is difficult to grasp how it can be applied to an object of which there are several known specimens.
The picture is further complicated by our native affection for overstatement. So this particular piece was not only, “Extremely unique,” but also “Absolutely genuine.” The last figure raises an interesting question. Are there degrees of the genuine? The introduction of the qualification “absolutely” in this case implies that there are. We all are familiar with art objects referred to as “genuine reproductions.” Perhaps the spectrum runs between the two extremes. Just where a simple genuine coin fits in is not quite clear. To approach the problem from another angle, if this particular numismatic item were not genuine how could it be advertised in the first place? The possibilities are infinite.
The question of the use of words brings up the greatest source of numismatic vexation — condition. Sooner or later the collector has to develop his own ability to distinguish between coins of different grades. Nevertheless, there are limits beyond which expectation outruns reality. We recently received a letter in which a gentleman was quite explicit about what he expected. He wrote:
“I’m enclosing my want list of a number of coins. The coins must be brilliant uncircu- lated, gem, sharply struck, satin-like surfaces, a superb and premium coin, full frosty lustre, Choice, in every respect. They must have no bag abrasions, rubbing, nicks, scratches or cabinet friction. To me a BU coin with slight rubbing is really an AU or XF coin. These are all to be Philadelphia mint and nicely centered. No planchet defects or adjustment marks.”
The Editor can sympathize with this collector’s desire for choice specimens and at the same time recognize just what has inspired his thinking. Obviously he has had some just grounds for complaint in the past. After reading his requirements, it is our opinion that he’d better give up coin collecting and turn to marbles instead. His precise catalogue of what he expects errs so far on the side of perfection that the pieces he wants probably don’t exist. He overlooks the simple fact that throughout its history the main function of the Philadelphia mint has been to turn out coins to be used as money. The product has had to be handled in bulk if it was to be handled at all. Kid gloves were out and bags were called upon to help to do the job. Perhaps even marbles are not in his line. As a boy the Editor can remember that the choicest examples became nicked when used to play the game.
Occasionally the customer expresses himself differently. As one said in a recent letter:
“I have always found dealing with Coin Galleries and Stack’s a great pleasure. I say this because of my lack of confidence in some of your competitors. You have the decency to
send a person a card to tell him if he was not the successful bidder on any Lot.
completely ignores you and the first you hear is when the price list comes. Furthermore, the
descriptions of your coins are far superior to those of . In the case of ,
I was once accused by a long distance call of not having paid a bill. When I informed the
— 68
caller I had, he said he would check and get back to me. I never heard from him again. In your case I always get a card telling me I have paid.” Well, we do our best and certainly appreciate this gentleman’s expression of confidence.
Sooner or later most of us have the experience of encountering examples of truth so absolute that we are left speechless and breathless at the same time. On a recent visit to Washington the Editor had just such an confrontation. He visited the new numismatic display in the Smithsonian Institution arranged under the auspices of Dr. and Mrs. Clain-Stefanelli, the charming and knowledgeable curators of the U. S. National Coin Collection. No one interested in coins should miss it. Without question it is the finest thing of the kind to be seen in this country and sets a standard that numismatic displays in foreign countries cannot surpass. One afternoon while admiring the splendour of the great treasures to be seen he was suddenly brought back to reality with a bump. The clear bell-like voice of a 9 year old girl pierced the room. She said, “Gee, there’s a lot of gold going to waste in this place.”
BOOK REVIEW by J. Eric Engstrom
Krause, Chester L. and Mishler, Clifford Standard Catalog of World Coins (Krause Publica- tions, Iola, Wisconsin, 1972) 814" x 11" 792 pp. Illus. paper covers $10.00.
Although the Standard Catalog of World Coins has been available on the market for only a few months, it has already become a numismatic best seller — and for good reason. This publication fills the need for a comprehensive standard catalogue of world coins which covers, by date, all coin issues (including gold) from the middle 19th century to 1971. This feat has been achieved by a bulky book of nearly eight hundred pages which the publisher tells us contains over 15,000 photographs, over 30,000 date listings and over 100,000 coin valuations, and lists some two hundred-sixty countries, states and cities.
The authors and the legion of contributors to this work are to be congratulated on an excellent product which will increase public interest in world coins. While the book owes much to the catalogues of Wayte Raymond, Richard Yeoman and William D. Craig in the foreign coin field, the authors point with pride to the extensive listings for certain lesser-known countries in North Africa, and the Middle East, which are the result of original research. Too, such complicated coinages as those of China and India are presented in a comprehensive manner which should please all collectors except the most highly specialized.
The introductory pages to the catalogue are of value, especially to the beginning collec- tor. Guides to using the catalogue are given for identification, denominations, dating, photo- graphs (including a handy millimeter scale) condition and valuations. The photographs of the coins are stated to be reproduced actual size in most instances. This is a great aid for identifying non-Western issues when denomination and size are often confusing. Where slight size changes are important, actual millimeter sizes are stated. Unfortunately, many valuations are given only in good, very fine and uncirculated. Some more recent coins and commemorative issues — including the Germanic states — are valued in very fine, extremely fine and uncirculated.
The country-by-country listings include year and mintage information for most nations since the mid-19th century. The United States catalogue is complete from 1792 and includes valuations in seven grades for most coins. The British coinage begins with Queen Victoria in 1838. French coins, listed from 1848, should further stimulate the growing interest in these minor pieces. Russian coinage listed here begins with issues of 1856. For Germany the two, three and five mark denominations are listed for the latter part of the 19th century,
— 69 —
with comprehensive date and mint information given for the entire Empire. Curiously, Mexican coins are catalogued from only 1905. The 19th century is avoided altogether for this interesting and popular series. Perhaps the omission will be corrected in future editions.
A good many errors are to be expected in a work of this magnitude. The publisher has even provided a business reply envelope for the reader to fill in with comments and cor- rections. In return, he will receive a free copy of corrections to the first edition. My list of errors includes the following: The bronze cast Moroccan mazunas illustrated on p. 483 are not of the same date as those which are unpriced and described as “RR” to “RRR.” This series, with A.H. dates in easy-to-read Arabic numerals has always been troublesome foi the inexpei ienced collector who cannot properly attribute the coins. The vast majority of these crude bronzes are quite common, but now many of the illustrated pieces will be touted as rarities when they are clearly not the particular date listed as “R”.
The occasions for several German issues on p. 271, 273 are referred to as “corina— tions.” Hungarian coins on p. 350 are called “commerative silver.” Strangely, the various British coronation specimen sets of the 20th century appear without any reason given for their issuance. This lack of historical awareness is present for many countries’ special issues and detracts from the book’s usefulness.
The interesting Russian Czarist commemorative roubles are illustrated on p. 583 without any description of what they commemorate. No doubt some specialists will debate the mint- age figures given for certain countries, mints and years. In this vein the British Churchill crown on p. 313 is given a mintage of 12,080,000 but Royal Mint records indicate 19,640,000.
While the listings for India are excellent, it is unfortunate no reference is made to the fact that the Indian Government has been restriking large numbers of the older silver issues. This information coud have been given in a brief warning paragraph.
Collectors will be either dismayed or pleased at the comprehensive section euphemisti- cally called “non-circulating legal tender coins” in Appendix A. This Appendix covers a multitude of sins: medal-like coins, coin-like medals, “souvenirs,” “fantasies,” the coins of still-extant crusader orders, legitimate proof or specimen sets, and many items which perhaps should remain undefined and, hopefully, obscure. No collector of world coins can possibly have avoided these items which have often been highly publicized and promoted. Much has been written concerning them. Many collectors are, apparently, fascinated by these “coins” and the private mints continue to supply dubious numismatic items from Ras al Khaima, Giordania and points east. Despite one’s feelings about these pieces, their description in this work is valuable, although several additions could be made. A Monaco one and five Franc 1960 specimen set, and the 1965 Yemen Royalist rial featuring Sir Winston Churchill are not pictured or described.
A final section devoted to world mint sets is also useful. Here it is stated that, “Czechoslovakian sets are being restruck on an as required basis.” No similar warning appears for the Hungarian restrikes on p. 351.
Many collectors I have talked to have complained that there are no country headings on each page. This makes quick referencing more difficult. Valuations are always very controversial. Those given in the Standard Catalog of World Coins are no exception. In the course of comparing several recent dealers’ price lists with the catalogue, I found it high for many of the uncirculated coins, but low on a number of others in only very fine. This disparity may not hold true throughout the work, and it must be remembered that many valuations are only estimates and do not reflect prices for pieces actually offered or sold.
Despite any such small blemishes which will undoubtedly be corrected in future editions, this is a magnificent effort. Try it — you’ll like it.

DEBASEMENT OF THE POST ROMAN COINAGE
“From the decline of the Roman Empire in the west, the confusion and variety of coins through the Middle Ages made changes in weight and alloy too numerous to recount. There was no production of gold or silver corresponding to the expansion of trade. In a foolish attempt to make the supply of the precious metals go round, there was everywhere a constant reduction in the quality and weight of the monetary standard. The very unit itself was uncertain: the solidus reappeared as the shilling or sou, the libra as the livre or lire, as a result of depreciation. The dishonesty of governments led to increasing the alloy, or reducing the grains of metal, in coins of the same name.”

SPANISH AMERICAN SILVER
“The great production of silver from Mexico and Potosi, as formerly explained, passed through Spain and her mints to the whole world. This has caused since the sixteenth century a remarkable diffusion of silver dollars to the most remote countries. It was aided by the later extraordinary production of silver from Mexico in 1760-1830. The excess of silver went abroad mainly in the form of dollars. During these centuries Spain was the leading trading nation of the world, thus making the silver dollar the best-known coin of that time.”
