THE attention of the reader is called to the ad\ertising section of this book, w ith the belief that these pages, containing as they do the latest information as to the leading Material Supply and Building Construction Firms in Pittsburgh and the \ icinity, are of interest and \alue, not only to the members of the Aixhitectural profession and the Building trades, but to the general public as well.

It is to be regretted that conditions at the Galleries compel the restriction of the Exhibits to the Art of Architecture to the e.xclusion of much material of the greatest interest showing the progress of the science of building. Those who are interested are referred to the Exhibit of building materials and appliances at the Builders Exchange and to the many Exhibits of their products maintained b\- manufacturers, which are open at all times and should pro\e most \aluable and instructi\e to Architects and their clients.

In order that purchasers may have the benefit of this experi- ence we have arranged with one of the largest Surety Companies in ."America — The United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company of Baltimore — to issue, hereafter, a 20-Year Guaranty Bond on all Barrett Specification Roofs of 50 squares or more in all towns in the I'nited States and Canada of 2.S,000 population and over, and in smaller places where our Inspection Service is available. fl The eflfectiveness as well as the economy of illumination is dependent upon the arrangement of the lamps and upon many other considerations which one who has made a study of illuminating engineering may easily suggest and explain.

^ The remarkable growth in the use in the household of electric labor-saving appliances necessitates special consideration for their convenient operation. This is cspccialh' urgent in view of the immense popularity of the indirect form of illumination which demands the in- stallation of separate base-board or floor receptacles for the operation of portable lamps and electrical appliances. There are many little problems like this in house designing which an architect might overlook, but which an illumi- nating engineer would naturalh^ see.

^ Electric power is such a vital necessity in every industrial and commercial enterprise that the advice of an industrial engineer should always be given consideration. His experi- ence may result in increased effectiveness and economies of operation, more efficiency on the part of plant employes and safer working conditions.
